CCF: Free Education for Disadvantaged Children

Excerpts from Child Care Foundation's website http://ccfghana.blogspot.com/:

Child Care Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established in 2004 by me, Lila M. Djaba when I was 24 years old. I set up the Foundation to provide free education for disadvantaged children. Based on their performance, where promising, I enroll them into regular schools. The Foundation is registered with the Ghana Department of Social Welfare as a charity (Registration No. DSW2845). Currently we are helping orphans, child workers, street kids and vulnerable children grow up in healthy, nurturing environments that provide quality care, protection, education, and support.

The Child Care Foundation (CCF) operates a FREE school in Mallam, a suburb of Accra (capital of Ghana). The school has two teachers, two administrators (one being myself) and several other local volunteers who assist periodically. It operates from a small building on family land. While they are divided into grades (depending on education level) and have different class materials, they are all taught in a single classroom.

What Lila did not mention is this: The classroom is a simple room built at her grandmother's home. The teachers, one of whom is Lila's uncle, have not been paid in all four years. CCF currently teaches about 70 children in this small room and mostly outside. They have another 50+ children on a waitlist. They are in desperate need for a new school!

W.A.T.E.R., a U.S. 501(c)3 non-profit that supports CCF, has been working diligently to find a space solution for CCF. Earlier this year, it had appeared that W.A.T.E.R. would be able to purchase a piece of land with a building already on it for $30,000, which was a great price. Unfortunately, the deal eventually fell through. W.A.T.E.R. is currently improving and expanding on CCF's existing space, while continuing to look for a new location for the CCF school.

The money we raise for CCF will go toward their new space solution, as well as sponsoring CCF students into regular schools. In 2007, 20 children were enrolled in regular school through sponsorship, after they were able to pass the exams to gain entrance. One of them placed #1 in science during her first year in school! They are smart children with great potential; all they need is an opportunity.

Here you can read the full proposal by Jim Niquette, Executive Director of W.A.T.E.R.  We are participating in W.A.T.E.R.'s effort to raise a total of $64,000 for CCF. Through synergy, any grand vision is within reach. We would love for you to join us in bringing that vision to life.
